I often spawn multiple tabs containing videos. These all start playing immediately in competition with each other, and I need to jump from tab to tab to pause each video, then go back and play each one individually. The problem has been fixed in Firefox Quantum, but still exists in the pre-Quantum versions.

Note that this issue is different from stopping auto-play (for which there are already a number of questions and answers). Auto-play is fine, I just don't want it to start until I switch to the tab.

For anyone else in this situation, I'll post an answer on how to solve this, although the thread's useful life will be limited because support will end for the pre-Quantum ESR version.

My issue is the opposite of this question, which refers to undoing the "corrected behavior" in post-Quantum versions. The applicable parameter is the same, but the solution route in that answer is different, and users with my problem may not find that reverse question in a search. So I'll post the route and setting that I know works in pre-Quantum Firefox.
0 How do I tell Firefox to stop asking me whether to open or save files [duplicate] bdesham 2018-07-21T18:51:24Z 2018-07-21T18:51:24Z

This question already has an answer here:

Skipping the download dialog in Firefox 7 answers

When I click a link to a file that Firefox cannot natively display, it gives me this dialog box:

I always want to save files, not open them. I can "unlock" my smart card from the Security Devices dialog, and get prompted for the PIN as expected. But, when I visit a site that wants to use the card for authentication, I get prompted for a PIN before even being asked to select a certificate. Then, I get prompted many more times (5-10) before the login process completes. Visiting the same site from a Linux box (using
coolkey
drivers) results in a single PIN prompt.

I'm using the default config file for OpenSC, which I think means PIN caching should be enabled. I don't even know if this is a Firefox problem, OpenSC problem, or something specific to the site in question. This also happens when they are both on the DP ports (but I had some sleep-related powerup issues and it works better like this).

After a few seconds (up to a minute or so) the secondary monitor will flicker and flash with static. As soon as I stop the stream (having to return to the browse page) the flickering stops immediately.

This happens in Chrome and Firefox (latest).

One thing I've noticed is that while Chrome and Firefox show the image when dragging the browser from monitor to monitor, Edge doesn't. It blanks out the image in the 'target' monitor until the whole browser has moved across. This makes me think it's something to do with HDCP.

Any ideas what I can do about it? Are there some Chrome flags anyone knows about that might help with this? Can I disable HDCP or something?

Cheers!
0 Minimum tab width in Firefox Quantum radoh 2018-07-18T16:02:06Z 2018-07-18T16:02:06Z
Firefox Quantum changed the minimum width of Tabs, previous versions of Firefox had it set to a greater value.

(*minimum tab width - when you have a lot of open tabs they shrink to some predefined minimum width).

How do I increase this predefined minimum tab width?
4 How long does chrome & firefox cache a file if no "expires" or "max-age" tag is set? skerit 2013-12-13T10:47:57Z 2018-07-18T14:04:59Z
I would like to know what the default max-age is of an image or css file, but can't seem to find it anywhere.

Someone suggested it was only 300 seconds, but that doesn't seem to be correct.
0 Call to same-domain API from React website throws 401 on Chrome and Edge, but works on IE and Firefox Spikee 2018-07-18T13:46:05Z 2018-07-18T13:46:05Z
Background

I have a React website that posts a status update to an API on the backend, both are on the same server and domain.

This POST is done using a wrapper function on top of fetch:

export function PostDirectly(url){ return fetch(url, { method: 'POST', headers: { Accept: 'application', 'Content-Type': 'application' } }) }

Symptoms

All is fine on
Firefox
and
IE
.

I get
401 (Unauthorized)
on
Chrome
and
Edge

It looks like there's the most information to be found on Edge:

I think there's a difference in behavior on how to handle certain security settings amongst the browsers, but I have no idea where to look.

Some additional background

React UI Web Api 2 Basic logged-in user auth against the AD

Neither UI or API require specific authentication, logged-in user credentials are fine.

Question

What can make, doing the same action on multiple browsers, throw a 401 error for Chrome and Edge, where it works exactly as planned on IE and firefox?

0 How to determine which preference file lock a Firefox config option Quicky 2018-07-18T13:34:16Z 2018-07-18T13:34:16Z
On a Windows 7 computer, My Firefox network.proxy.type is locked so I cannot modify it When looking at C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\default/prefs/localsettings.js there are only 2 lines:

pref("general.config.obscure_value", 0);

pref("general.config.filename", "config.cfg");

Then when looking at config.cfg there is no line looking like

lockPref("network.proxy.type", 5);

and when I try to add my own preference with an other value

pref("network.proxy.type", 2); I see in firefox that the preference is locked and don't take my value in account.

I also looked inside about:support to determine my profile directory and looked in every .cfg and .js files but still no lockPref that could explain why network.proxy.type is locked

Is there a way to know from which configuration file the lock is coming ? Johannes 2013-08-29T14:29:14Z 2018-07-18T08:29:29Z
Some people who suffer protanomaly can hardly distinguish red text from black text on computer screens. Many web pages like show visited and unvisited text links in red'ish colors. That reduces usability drastically for those affected.

How do I change the color of un/visited text links of Firefox and Chrome on Windows and Linux to classic blue'ish colors, thus making the web usable for people who suffer protanomaly?

The settings of Firefox and Chrome offer to override fonts and colors, e.g Firefox -> Edit -> Preferences -> Content -> Colors... -> untick Allow pages to choose their own colors. How can I have proper rendering of apostrophes and quotes?

EDIT The apostrophe is correctly rendered when I increase the font size (via FF Ctrl-+) to 140% or above. This issue is occurring in both Firefox 27.0.1 and IE11.

The website I'm trying to view does usually partially load but will not completely load. The spinner in the tab shows there is activity and clicking links does not work. In Firefox I see at the bottom the page
Transferring data for
(IE doesn't show this though).

I use Firebug so have investigated the issue in Firefox with that, and it seems one of two things is happening -

Not all scripts/styles are loading and never do.

All of scripts/styles/image/etc are loading but the HTML Response for the page I'm trying to view is truncated, with only a portion of the page making it to the browser.

I initially tried the obvious things -

Firefox -> History -> Clear Recent History...

Browsing and Download History

Form & Search History

Cookies

Cache

Active Logins

Internet Explorer -> Tools -> Internet options -> (General) -> Delete...

Temporary Internet files and website files

Cookies and website data

History

Disable all anti-virus

This didn't work so I tried reinstalling Firefox (and uninstalling IE11 entirely), but that also didn't work.

This is in a corporate environment where PFSense is used to manage the leased line connection that is being used, so there is no router in play that could be causing a problem. Besides, every other PC is connecting to these websites just fine (this is the only Windows 8/8.1 machine in the business).

I'm also fairly certain that it cannot be the network card as I have been successfully connected to several Terminal Servers since the upgrade without issue.

I'm now at a for what could be causing this, so I'd be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks.
3 How to copy a link in Firefox with a plain text decoded format to past it in Notepad [duplicate] P.
