Electroencephalography (EEG) Laboratory
An EEG (electroencephalogram) is a non-invasive, totally painless test that detects and records electrical impulses in the brain (brain waves) produced by billions of nerve cells. It provides vital information about the health and function of the brain.
During the EEG, small and flat metal discs called electrodes are attached to the scalp with wires. The electrodes analyze the electrical impulses in the brain and send signals to a computer, where the results are recorded.
Why Is an EEG Performed?
The measurements given by an EEG are used to confirm or rule out various conditions, including:
- seizure disorders (such as epilepsy)
- a head injury
- encephalitis (an inflammation of the brain)
- a brain tumor
- encephalopathy (a disease that causes brain dysfunction)
- memory problems
- sleep disorders/sleep disturbances
- blackout spells
- nervous system infections
- headaches and dizziness
- body weakness
- learning disorders
- behavioural changes/disturbances
- When someone is in a coma, an EEG may be performed to determine the level of brain activity.
- The test can also be used to monitor activity during brain surgery.
Asian Hospital and Medical Center has a state-of-the-art digital, 32-channel EEG Machine that provides reliable and accurate results.
At soonest time, we will have Epilepsy Monitoring Unit that is located on Neuro-ICU bay 1. The set up is on the intensive care unit to ensure patient’s safety while hooked on the EMU. Epilepsy Monitoring Unit records for 24 hours or more. Epilepsy monitoring capability is to assist our epilepsy specialists in diagnosing and treating adult and pediatric patients with seizures, spells, or poorly-controlled epilepsy.
Our cutting-edge equipments are complemented by highly competent and experienced EEG specialists and technologists.
