Nuclear Medicine

A specialized area that involves the administration of radioactive substances in diagnosing and treating disease.

The procedures in nuclear medicine often identify abnormalities at a very early progression of a disease; these may include many types of cancer, heart disease, renal, endocrine, and gastrointestinal and other abnormalities within the body, as well as the patient’s response to therapeutic interventions.

a nuclear scan using white blood cells that are “tagged” with radioactive material to locate areas of infection or inflammation.

Three-Phase Bone Scan
a nuclear scan that is performed when osteomyelitis is suspected.

Determine the presence of or localizing site of obstruction.

Salivary Gland Imaging
Evaluation and assessment of salivary gland after head and neck irradiation.

Interventional Applications: Gamma Probe Guided

Sentinel Lymph Node Mapping

  • Staging modality of choice for breast cancers and melanomas that are clinically node-negative.
  • Evaluates breast cancer spread by identifying and localizing sentinel lymph nodes.

Parathyroid Localization
For rapid intraoperative localization of parathyroid adenomas to boost diagnostic accuracy and decrease morbidity in patients with Primary Hyperparathyroidism, (Minimally Invasive Parathyroidectomy)

Therapeutic Applications

Radioactive (RAI) Iodine-131 Therapy

  • Low dose for Hyperthyroidism
  • High dose for Ablation Therapy

Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT)

  • It is a liver-directed therapy for liver tumors that uses tiny radioactive beads.
  • It is used to treat liver tumors that can not be removed by surgery.
  • SIRT is done by a specially trained Interventional Radiologist and Nuclear Medicine Consultant.

All imaging and therapeutic/interventional procedures are by appointment. Radioimmunoassay (RIA) Laboratory tests including blood extraction are NOT scheduled and are performed during operating hours.
